John D'earth is awesome and I was so happy I took this class. He is intent on establishing a good relationship with each student and implores you to meet with him outside of class, generally for a private lesson of some sort. The class presents a lot of theory, as well as playing time. John makes certain everyone can first understand the theory behind what you're playing and then lets everyone solo. Go to class and practice and you'll do fine. Highly recommend
This class is so much fun. The material is interesting and the professor is awesome. This was my favorite class by a landslide. Everyone improves their jazz skills in the class, and, because it is a small class, it is easy to make friends. For the midterm and final, John asks everyone to get in a small group and play a song for the rest of the class. These projects turn out really amazing and they are a great way to make friends that you can jam with. John is very relaxed and extremely likable. I look forward to taking jazz band so I can have him again. The only homework is practicing.
Absolutely do not take this course unless you fit 1 of 2 criteria:
1. You play a wind/brass instrument
2. You know PLENTY of music theory going into the class
If you don't fit one of those two criteria, and happen to take the course, get ready to do some catch up work. John is incredibly biased and will treat his favorite students with respect, and his other students with something akin to disdain. If he doesn't like the instrument you play, he will genuinely make your life a living hell, regardless of the effort you put into it.
To be fair, John knows a ton about music and I think overall he tries to be a nice guy, and as far as teachers go he's pretty laid back, but it's honestly not worth it if you aren't a favorite of his from the get go.
The only real plus side of the course is meeting your fellow classmates and occasionally jamming with them.
