Stagg knows his stuff and is very interested in the period. Nice professor, willing to help students. But the lectures were really dry and there is a LOT of readings so it's easy to get behind and hard to catch up, I could never do all of them.
The material was interesting but you should be really interested in the subject and ready to work a lot otherwise it won't be worth it.
Your basic history class breakdown: midterm, paper, final (25%, 25%, 50%). Stagg knows his stuff and it shows in lectures, as he provides far more information than is necessary to know for a good exam grades. His style can be dry at times when delving into less relevant topics (ex: developments in China in the 1800s), but office hours are extremely helpful to review the most important pieces of material.
Though Professor Stagg is extremely knowledgeable in his subject, he is one of the dullest professors I have ever had in lecture. I think a third of the class (of 24) dropped after the first few weeks. You spend $300 dollars on 8 books which, if you read all of, negates the need for you to try and stay awake during his lecture.
He was very hard to contact by email or at office hours.
There is 1 major research paper (12-16pg) at the level of difficulty for a 3000 level class.
The exam is writing based, and the answers are analytical and easy if you have done the reading
