Osheim's lectures are confusing and difficult to follow, as is the structure of the course in general. It is very hard to figure out what is going on as the chronology is so disjointed. There's a lot of art discussion in the course, but perhaps it would be better just to take an Italian art class. There is one extremely good assignment, writing a paper with primary sources, the only flaw of which is that your options for material are too narrow.
Osheim leads an interesting lecture that you have to pay attention to in order to do well on the mid-term and final. He doesn't post slides or anything so it is crucial to be in class. He does, however, give you a review guide to prepare for both the final and mid-term. Both exams are the usual identification, significance, etc., typical of history classes and a few short essays on the importance or significance of specific quotes. Terry is the man and a great TA. Doing the reading is tedious.
This class was okay. Going into it, I really thought it was going to be more interesting than it actually was; however, that's not to say that it wasn't enjoyable. Osheim is a great guy and a good lecturer, but it always seemed as if he was rushing through class. He divvied up each class with a different topic, very few of which seemed to flow with the previous one, so he tried to fit a lot of information into every class, almost to a fault. There is a lot to know and he doesn't post slides on Collab, but if you go to class, pay attention, and take reasonably detailed notes, you should be fine. Both the midterm and final weren't that hard, and he actually gives you the four possible essay questions prior to the final (of which he chooses two). Other than that, two papers throughout the semester based on readings.
As for discussion, that's a horse of a different color. Honestly, I dreaded going to it every week just because Rosemary was so bad at facilitating conversation and just awkward in general. There were five or so pop quizzes throughout the semester based on readings, although none were overly difficult (lowest score dropped, as well). Rosemary is nice enough, just not fit for the whole teaching thing.
