I took David's Fall 2023 GSGS3599 Space, Place and Global Studies. David is incredibly nice and grades very generously. However, I find his teaching style more fitting for fourth-years, maybe third-years. Although we discuss a lot in class, his classes are not very structured to highlight central concepts. One very interesting concept we constantly returned to is the idea of abstract, differential and democratic spaces (from a Purcell article, with ideas building off of Henri Lefebvre's Production of Space). It is a central concept for the class and we mentioned it centrally once only. It is quite dependent on what you the student make of the class. The more time you put into the reading, the more you will get out of this experience. As I am not a fourth-year, the wide amounts of space left for us to explore our own interests was not helpful. But if you are looking for a space to pursue interesting projects especially related to countermapping, another central idea in this class, this is the right place to go. The concepts are generally quite advanced, but you can get by probably by not understanding most of them.
