The way this class is set up is fairly engaging; Levine tries to get students to talk, but often comes off as frustrated because her students don't always share her enthusiasm for lengthy black and white french films or nonsensical documentaries. Some of the films we watched were more entertaining than others, and I do think I took some knowledge away from this class. But I would consider myself a major film nerd, and still wouldn't recommend this class, at least not with Alison Levine. The writing assignments are childish, Levine's ego often makes her appear as unfriendly, and she's a ridiculously picky grader. You can do all the work or none at all and you'll still get a B or B+.
I really liked this class. I thought Mme Levine was an excellent professor. She was always there for extra help to go over papers, etc. I also liked the course material, although it could be hard to see the movies in time for class. My only caution is that, although I loved the class, there were a lot of students who were not too thrilled.
