Great class - Thomson is a former senior analyst with the EPA and divides the course into a "theories-values-practice" set-up which works well. A lot of in-class discussion, some painful reading, but a lot of interesting material overall. Midterms are based on just about everything; follow the directions on your paper to make sure you get an A.
While the course itself was interesting, if you have already taken the introductory level, it's hard to find yourself engaged in material you have already learned and mastered. I found the professor to be cold and unable to consider alternative opinions. At the intro level, I was intrigued by her. At this level, I found myself wanting to leave at every possible opportunity.
Not a class to take if you are not going into the ETP major. Professor is very cold and calculating and the material is basically a rehash of the intro course, but in a single discussion/lecture course so it's worse than having a TA. Really shouldn't be an EVSC course as it relates far more to American politics and the professor has a tendency to progress into inane ramblings about political beliefs likely to insult at least a quarter of the class, minimum. And if you get the impression that this political freedom applies to you, your grade will be amazed by the double standard. You can easily hide your cringe at her presentations in the big lecture at Clark but if you take this course I recommend taking Acting I alongside it; otherwise it'll be a rough semester.
