This class and this professor are worth taking. Swap is hilarious and is effective at relaying the information in an understanding and fun way. You will have to give a group presentation in front of the whole class (around 150 people) but since you have a group those that dread presentations can only speak briefly and still get an A on their presentation. Swap incorporates class group work but dividing the class into 25 groups and gives you questions to answer. His exams are straightforward; read the book chapters and look over his powerpoints and you will be fine.

Professor Swap is smart and engaging; he demands that students think critically about their own position and impact on the planet, and he does so in a way that is accessible and valuable to everyone in the room. While the class is not very difficult, the material is both useful and intriguing. I was expecting to hate the group project portion of the class (7-9 people per group, 10-minute presentation; every single student is expected to speak in front of the 160-person class), but Swap sets up the project so that each group has a ton of support and so that (almost) everyone puts forth a decent amount of effort. Take this class; if you let him, Swap will change your perspective for the better.

Professor Swap is the best. I would not say that this class taught me a lot of concrete information, but I would say that it has forged within me a new lens through which to evaluate concrete information. This class gives a different perspective. It is not there as a foundation for environmental science, but instead as a reminder that maybe we aren't all high and mighty as humans, and maybe we are more connected than we previously taught. Very much like people tell you to take a class with professor elzinga before you leave UVA, I suggest taking a class with professor swap. He is truly entertaining and will make you be a better human being if you let him.

p.s. the tests are insanely easy and you should probably go to office hours if you like interesting stories

Swapp is awesome lecturer, he really cares about his class and is super helpful, he often makes himself available at office hours! His class is super interesting, he gives a huge overview of many topics in environmental science which I find to be super interesting.

This is the best class I have taken at UVA so far! Professor Swap is the coolest professor I have had ! He is a really interesting teacher. He puts all his powerpoints on collab, but you still should go to class because there are in class activities that count as your participation grade. The tests are all fair, except for a few random questions that have to do with numbers or statistics, but they are facts that he repeated a few times so you know they are important. Don't stress about the end of year project because Swap makes it easy! Overall a GREAT class and I highly recommend taking it.
