This is a super chill and easy class, and you have to try to get below an A-. Only two 4 page papers and participation counted for the grade with very minimal reading. I think that this is a great way to knock out the ENWR requirement for Echols scholars or for pre-med students who need another writing class. Additionally, because this class only meets once a week for 2 hours, it is a very good class to take with pledging if that is your thing.
Professor parks is also very flexible with pressing personal circumstances and totally understands if you have difficult stuff going on. Lastly, you get to meet some really cool international democracy advocates as Parks is very much in tune with that world and has a lot of strong connections in that regard. So, if you're really into international human and democratic rights this is also a great class to take if you want to pursue that further.
TLDR - super easy writing class w/ very little writing. Take this if you want to lighten your load and learn about a cool topic.
Professor Parks is one of the best professors that you could ever have. I highly recommend his class. He is great at explaining concepts, navigating challenging readings, and he is exceptionally understanding/lenient with assignment deadlines, within reason. The course is not that difficult, you will need to do weekly readings, which are not too difficult/long to read, and he will go over the concepts discussed in the readings with the class to ensure everyone is on the same page. You will have to take notes on the readings as that will be part of your final portfolio.
Other than that, we have worked as a class for different democratic issues in the world, the specific issue varies on your section but mine was about Belarus. Overall, this was a wonderful experience that allowed us to actually plan out a way to make a difference in the world and apply the knowledge we've learned.
Overall, I highly recommend taking this class with this professor. You will not regret it!
Steve is awesome. I really enjoyed this course and I learned a lot about democracy and nonviolent protest. The actual course is fairly easy and as long as you put some effort into the writing, Steve will work with you to get you a good grade. The class environment is very fun and heavily discussion based. This course was my favorite of the semester. Would really recommend.
