Ngl was not too excited to take a second writing requirement but Professor Nobles is amazing. This is not an easy course, it is challenging and time consuming but you will come out a better student, writer, and more cognitively aware. Professor Nobles has a very generous revision policy so don't get bogged down by your first grade returns, it is all part of the growing process. She is super approachable and helpful in all aspects. The small class size was great too, we received very meaningful feedback and had lots of opportunity to work together. 10/10 now that it's over.
Professor Nobles is the sweetest. She has a really great outlook on what it means to grow as a writer (which means that her revision policy is basically that you can revise your work as many times as you'd like throughout your semester to earn the grade you want). This sometimes means that your initial grade on an essay might be kind of rough, but she usually provides specific and actionable feedback that you can learn a lot from. There were three papers on the culture of writing at UVA (each using sources from a different time period and not too long with a max of around 1800 words I think). There was also a creative project in the end where we got to create our own piece for special collections (a lot of people did a collection of journal entries or poetry). The final was basically just presenting all of our work throughout the semester (a very nice and easy final amidst the chaos of everything else going on at that time of year). The main weekly work was a Forum post (graded for completion), sometimes about a light reading from the week. We were also sometimes graded (for completion) on in-class peer-editing. This class had such supportive and kind vibes - I'll really miss it!
Professor Nobles is an awesome professor and this was a really interesting class about the past, present, and future of the culture of writing here at UVA! I took this class after having Professor Nobles as my ENWR 1510 professor and she is just amazing. I could tell that she was really passionate about what we are doing in the class (it is entirely of her own design) and the class offered so many unique experiences, even with it being online - I imagine that these experiences would be even greater during an in-person experience. We visiting special collections multiple times to see some really interesting documents from UVA's past, and we also got the opportunity to do our own research in special collections on any topic that we wanted.
This was a really amazing class that I highly recommend for that second writing requirement.
