I took the Science and Medical Communications class with Professor Allison. It is both interesting and super easy, though if you do not like video projects I would not recommend this class, as it entails several. In each class, we discuss either an aspect of ways to make your science writing more accessible to the general public, or discuss certain language or metaphorical conventions (such as how we talk about the sperm and the egg in the reproductive process, or how we talk about cancer being a battle) and their implications. The class is graded on three "portfolios." The first is writing an accommodated science article of your choice, the second is a video explanation of a topic of your choice, and the third is a science presentation "for the good of society" of your choice. There is a lot of flexibility in this class! The readings are mostly about medical topics, so if you like all sciences but the medical field you will probably not enjoy this class.
Really fun course! Professor Allison is really funny and makes the class really engaging every day. There are a lot of short essays, a few long essays, and several script/speaking assignments throughout the semester, but overall the work is not bad at all. Go to her office hours to get help on essays, and just to talk to her in general. Highly recommend!
