Ellen is extremely nice, but unfortunately her lectures are extremely dry and the amount of reading she assigns is on the border of obscene. I put in a lot of work for this class, but ended up with a B,+ because towards the end of the semester you are so burned out by the amount of work you just don't care anymore.
The class was kind of interesting, but there was SO much reading involved, and most of it was not accessible or necessary. I ended up doing about 1/4-1/3 of the total readings assigned, and ended up with an A-. The topics covered are definitely important for linguistics majors and the class is worth while, but the reading amount and difficulty was excessive. Contini-Morava definitely knows what she's talking about.
A tough course, but very helpful for the linguistics major since about all the other courses I've taken have touched upon the development/history of the field since its founding. It explains some of the major theories of linguistics and what they seek to explain, how they conceive of language, etc. I found it all very useful and helpful, but it certainly wasn't the easiest class. Professor Contini-Morava's teaching style isn't bad, but it isn't very personal and the class atmosphere was businesslike. Still, I was generally ok with lecture except on days after some of the tougher readings. Professor Contini-Morava definitely knows her stuff, and is approachable -- just don't feel intimidated and don't be afraid to ask questions or go to office hours. Homework assignments were sort of challenging but not terrible to actually do, and always offered options. One of the harder linguistics courses, but I found it helpful, and it does at least fulfill the Theory requirement for the major.
