I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS COURSE! As we all know, the Petrovic family along with their dog continues to dominate the classics department. I will keep my thing very short and direct as much as possible. Ivana leads her class more like a storytelling event than an actual lecture. But do remember to take notes! Most of what she says in lectures are all in exams. (she normally would say to use a notebook rather than a laptop). Topics in this class included medicine, ancient greek aphrodisiacs, rite of passage rituals; overall I can't say enough good things about this class.
For exams, there is one midterm and one final and they both really reflective of what was said in lecture. Really easy. Ivana says there are pop quizzes of the terminology but they only happened 3x that entire semester.
10/10 on the course and the professor
Ivana Petrovich is a wonderful professor. She's extremely helpful and very knowledgeable about the material that she teaches. The lectures are a bit dry but the material is fascinating since Greek culture is so different from our own. Discussion sections didn't really seem that interesting to me but I'd take them over a lecture any day. In terms of structure, we had two classes per week - one on Tuesday and one on Thursday. On Tuesdays we had discussions and on Thursdays we had lectures. All comments aside, I do heavily recommend the class. Unlike other classes, your grade will actually reflect the amount of work you put into it. If you study thoroughly you'll definitely get an A. When I took the class we had 3 surprise quizzes total (which actually includes one in the syllabus so that's an exception), which irritated me slightly because she said that the quizzes would be frequent and typically on Tuesdays. The quizzes were indeed typically on Tuesdays and I think we had one on a Thursday. Overall, Ivana Petrovich is super nice, very cool, and very knowledgeable. Also her dog is really cute so you should go play with it during her office hours.
This class was so great! I took Rituals in Ancient Greece and it was so fun. You learn about all the weird things the Ancient Greeks did, so it's very interesting and funny. You have lecture on Thursdays and group work on Tuesdays, and you get reading for the group work, but you can skim it. We had a couple quizzes (that she said would be pop quizzes but she still told us we were having them) and they were really easy--just term identification, and she gives you a list of all the possible terms with each lecture. Midterm was also pretty easy and the final doesn't include stuff from the midterm. Overall a pretty straightforward class, just study your notes from the powerpoint and you'll be fine. Would definitely recommend for an easy, fun class!
Take this class. I had the opportunity of taking it with both Ivana and Andrej Petrovic, but both are absolutely incredible professors. Not only are they so smart, they have super fun personalities. This class is crazy interesting--you pretty much talk about the weird stuff of the ancient Greek world. However, the class leaves you with a great understanding of how humans work, too--a kinda surprising find. This class is designed the way college was meant to be. On Thursdays, you have lecture. Then you'd get 4 days to get the reading done; the reading really supplements the lectures (which are amazing). Then there is discussion on Tuesdays. The class is so interesting, interactive, and fair that you would be stupid not to take this class. The tests are super fair and creative--literally just read your notes and you'll be fine.
