I had Professor Petrovic, and thought that this was a wonderful class! Petrovic is an engaging lecturer, and hands out study sheets with vocab & locations on them at the beginning of each lecture. If you study these for the midterm/final, you should do fine in the class.
Section is mandatory and worth 25% of your overall grade. There are weekly readings that you go over each discussion, and you're graded on participation. I felt that the readings weren't really relevant to the courses as a whole. Often, they would be difficult to digest, and would go way over my head. However, the TAs do a good job of explaining key concepts, so it's not too difficult.
There was one 6-page paper due (also worth 25% of your grade) but if you asked early enough, you could ask the TA to proofread it for you. Again, an easy grade as long as you put in the effort and plan ahead.
This is a great class if you want to learn about Greek civilization and how their society worked! Like I said, Professor Petrovic is a really engaging lecturer. I enjoyed going to his classes, and learned a lot. He clearly outlines what to expect from taking this course, and is one of the better professors at UVA. He cares about his students, and is really approachable if you have any questions or just wanted to talk to him. As long as you put in the effort, you can easily get out with an A. I would recommend it to anyone, and highly suggest taking this course!
