The class isn't really contingent on material that Menaker brings to class. It is discussion based, so the conversation and things we learn come from 1) the reading, and 2) what the class wants to talk about. With that being said, if you get stuck with a whiney, entitled, conceited first year who never stops talking and challenges EVERYBODY and EVERYTHING because no one can have a right idea other than him (yes, i am talking to you, asshole who sits in the front), the class will be miserable. But Menaker is chill.
This class hinges very little on the readings and is mostly discussion based. Go to class prepared to have a mediated discussion with professor input. His teaching style is definitely catered towards people who bring outside knowledge and are willing to critically think and challenge ideas. I thoroughly enjoyed the topics and the open class discussion that the professor allowed. Also I'm pretty sure I was the "asshole first year" that the other commenter is bitter about but at least I enjoyed the class:)
