Professor Grissom has been an absolute highlight in this course this semester, and I can clearly tell that he loves what he teaches. He also cares about his students, which is a valued trait in any professor. You learn how to analyze plays from the standpoint of instructions for a performance, rather than as a piece of literature, which is the approach I was used to using in high school. I can definitely say that I look at play scripts, and performance overall, very differently. The course requires a forum response to each play, strict attendance, reading of the plays (obviously), and an in-class midterm and final (essay format), but the class is enlightening and enjoyable, and if you put in the work, you'll enjoy it.
If you're in the Drama department, I recommend this.
Grissom always had a fun twist for class discussion. We heard a lot of varying viewpoints for each text that we read. The class is only as good as your classmates, though. My class would not nearly have been as entertaining were it not for the extreme political variance between people. All forms of the left and right were represented.
The midterm was relatively simple. I commend Doug for not making this overly difficult for difficult's sake. I loved this class.
I will say, though, there are times in the first 2/3 of the class where you'll be reading three full length plays a week - and it does give you a little fatigue if you're already reading a lot.
