The class first half of the class is really easy, to the point that you really don't need to pay attention or go to class. After the first test, though, he shifts a bit to material that is a little harder. The reading becomes more essential to getting a nice grade and you should pay attention in discussions.
The actual material you read in Our Origins (the book he uses) is VERY interesting (if you like anthropology, biology, darwin etc.) but the lectures are literally death... Prof Hantman is such a cute little man but I can't remember a single lecture where i wasn't desperately clicking on stumble upon to stay awake. there are only three exams, and it is best to just thoroughly read the material. Attending lectures is not going to make or break your grade, and probably not really necessary. Great topic but lectures suck. not that hard for the most part, no homework!
I loved this class. Professor Hantman is a really cool, funny guy. But, he does get off topic and often spends 40 minutes going over something that really only needed 10. So if you're the type of student that really gets annoyed if lectures aren't straightforward, maybe rethink this class. The books assigned are really interesting and easy to read. The class is not hard at all. The midterm is worth the most of your grade and mostly just involves straight memorization. Nothing tricky. I would recommend to anyone interested in evolution. Its definitely a nice break if you're science/math heavy and you'll take a nice bit out of it.
Professor Hantman is by far my favorite professor at the University so far! He is very approachable, humorous, and easy going. As for the class, as long as you keep track of what is going on in lecture, studying for tests won't be stressful since the study guides Hantman sends you have every term and concept you need to know. A bit more science ended than your average anthropology class but recommend it for anyone!
