People always warn those looking at reviews to be wary of extremely positive or extremely negative reviews because they are almost always written out of passion and are not realistic indications of a professor's abilities to teach. This, however, is not the case for Professor Khare. Simply looking at the statistics for this course, you will notice how many students drop the course. You will also notice that he has NEVER given a student an A. The fact that this is a low-level anthropology course in which no student has gotten an A should already be a warning sign, one that I chose not to pay any mind to when I enrolled in this course.
This course was not only dull, as previously noted by the other commenters, but the syllabus was lazily put together and the topic of the course only loosely adhered to. There are 3 papers and 2 colloquia (presentations), none of which are explained clearly. Khare will flip-flop on what he wants in the paper from week to week and will refuse to give you a written prompt or description of the expectations. He does not clearly explain what he is looking for in papers and then does not tell you why you received marks off when you ask.
I would not recommend this course to ANYBODY. As an anthropology major, I was appalled at the laziness of the course and the utter lack of benefit I gained from it. I am embarrassed that my department has allowed this professor to continue teaching when he clearly has none of the passion or enthusiasm of other anthro professors. If this course is the only option to fulfill a major requirement, stay an extra semester if you have to to avoid taking this one. If you have never taken anthro before DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS because it will dissuade you from ever taking an anthropology course again and that is simply not fair.
This is probably one of the dullest classes I have ever taken. Two hours listening to this man rattle on about nothing is not the best way to spend your afternoon. But besides it being absolutely dreadful to get through, you don't really need to participate much and he grades pretty easily, which is good because he refuses to give you any guidance on the paper or presentation topics.
Prof Khare is very knowledgeable about the field but is one of the worst public speakers. His monotone voice put everyone in the class to sleep and those who weren't sleeping were on Facebook or online shopping on their laptops. He would benefit greatly from a TA who could help with class engagement. I would 10/10 recommend for an easy A though because it's only taught one day a week and you only have like 3 hours of reading per week too so it's easy to fit into your schedule.
