Carrie Douglass is a great professor. She is so interested in what she is teaching it gets you interested as well. Do the readings. They are pretty interesting and will help you a lot on the tests. There is a midterm, 2 book reviews, a final exam and a final essay where you pick a ritual and describe it. Sounds like a lot but she grades pretty easily. The exams are all ID's so just go to class and do the reading. She takes attendance. The book review papers are super easy as long as you read.
A great way to fulfill your non-western perspective. As long as you show up to class and take good notes, you can skim the readings and get an A in the class. There are 3 fairly long papers, but as long as you hand them in you'll get a good grade - she doesn't grade horribly on writing like some professors. Overall, she is a fair teacher who really loves the subject and wants to share her passion for symbol and ritual.
By far the best class I've taken with Professor Douglass. She sometimes gets off-topic during lectures, but she's very excited about the material in this course and has a lot to offer as an instructor. The workload, for an Anthropology class, was pretty in the middle leaning to the lighter side. There are about twenty article reactions, three longer papers, and two exams, which sounds worse than it actually is. It's a fairly easy A, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone at the university regardless of their intended major!
Fantastic course not to miss out on. If you're just looking for an extra class and are willing to do approximately 3 hours a week (you have to read an article then write your thoughts, just grades whether you did it or not), this class is perfect. Basically you learn about all different traditions like halloween, the bullfight and lots of others. Douglass is a great teacher who will give you a good grade if you put in the expected effort. Not an anthropology major and I recomend this course to anyone
