Professor Kwon is not a great teacher. He is very quiet and does not explain the concepts well. However, he is very nice if you talk to him in person. I ended up using Reiss's lecture recordings and office hours. Overall, the course is incredibly difficult but also incredibly rewarding. It will take the majority of your week, so try to take easier courses with this. I learned so much, & I think it is essential for every CS major.
This class singlehandedly ruined my semester. The assignments were brutal, poorly explained, and relied heavily upon students having an intrinsic understanding of Operating Systems. I typically don't complain about courses, and I actually appreciate when courses challenge me and force me to learn. I enjoyed, or at least appreciated, 2150, 3330, and 4102 for that very reason. However, the difference is that after all the work in those classes, I felt as though I could actually recreate my solutions to problems from scratch if asked. The lectures in this class were pointless; I just watched Reiss's lectures online. I think the greatest example of the lack of learning in this class is represented by the fact that the class averaged a 55 on a midterm that covered effectively just the basics. No actual learning has taken place in this class; any homework I have actually finished comes from a combination of randomly changing different C functions, me attending 15 + hours of Office Hours a week, and luck. There is no support system in place for students who don't automatically understand the course material. An understanding of Operating Systems is actually fairly critical to being a competent software engineer; however, I have no doubt that in 3 months I will have forgotten everything covered in this course. There is a reason why common practice for students is to save this course until your final semester when grades don't matter. Taking this course has made me regret my decision to pursue a BS in CS. Yongwhi is a really nice person, and I don't blame him at all for what this course has turned into.
