John Lach is definitely enthusiastic about his material and his students. He's definitely interested in getting to know his students (he hosts something called "homeworkless office hours") and he's usually friendly and helpful.
Success in this class definitely depends on how quickly you learn the MIPS assembly language, the entire first half of the course is essentially just learning and using the language. After that you move onto the actual hardware and learn how your assembly programs actually execute. It's interesting enough material and it's worthwhile to take if you're at all interested in learning how computers work.
Professor Lach is a fine lecturer. The material itself is pretty straightforward if you have prior knowledge of assembly programming. Most of the labs are doable within the lab period. Just keep in mind that there is no curve at the end. So make sure you don't do horribly on any of the exams because they count for such a big portion of your grade.
