This class is hell. But you have to take it because it's required for the major. Good luck and memorize the practice tests. I would recommend printing practice tests out and taking notes on them directly and asking him questions that are on the practice exams during lecture.

This class consumed the majority of my semester. The workload was ridiculous and downright cruel with 3 labs a week and some labs over breaks. Even so, this class definitely helped me better understand how computers work. An upbeat and helpful professor. He provides class lectures and slides online which is a plus.

Bloomfield is a great professor and lecturer and brings a great amount of enthusiasm to the class. However, the amount of work assigned each week is very great, and be prepared to spend ~8 hours on some of the labs (especially a few of the prelabs) the day before they are due. Definitely go to office hours whenever you need assistance, the TAs are very helpful as is Bloomfield. Go through the lecture notes and previous tests when studying for midterms and finals; the sheer number of past tests Bloomfield provides will help you study adequately. There is a generous curve at the end of the course, so as long as you can keep your lab and test grades reasonably decent, you should be fine.

This was one of the most difficult classes I have taken at UVA in terms of workload and amount of material covered. The labs are tough but the TAs are very helpful. I learned a lot in this class, so it was definitely worth it.

Bloomfield is a BAMF. Go to his office hours. He is amazing and WILL help you. Much better teacher than Horton who I had last time.

He is an excellent teacher. The class is hard, required, and in the end, worth it.

This class was definitely difficult. The lab was the meat of the course, Bloomfield makes his lecture very interesting and really easy to follow. He is also very understanding as well as helpful. I really enjoyed the class, although it was definitely one of the harder classes I have taken.

Very difficult, but you'll learn a lot. I walked away from this quite weary from all the hours in Thornton spent on lab reports, but now I know a ton about c++ and x86 so I would say it was a success.

Class is pretty challenging and time-intensive, but you'll feel like you've learned a lot by the end.
