I enjoyed Prof. Evan's cs1120 class - it was my first time coding, but I felt that I learned a lot and have gained a basic understanding of CS. His grading system is a little strange, where your grade is determined by which tae-kwon-doe belt color you have achieved by the end of the semester. You earn higher belt levels by completing the projects/doing in-class or take-home tests. This is pretty nice because it allows you to take the class at your own pace. I found that the way to pass this class was to go to as many office hours as possible, because lectures do not really coincide with the projects. But if you go to office hours, you'll be good - Prof. Evans does a good job of helping you to better understand the concepts you are missing in your projects.
Dedicated and knowledgeable professor. This CS topics covered in this course are NOT easy. The problem sets (about 7 of them) take on average anywhere between 8-12 hours to finish for each; TA help is required if you are not advanced in CS. That being said, put forth the effort, and you will probably get a good grade. I had to work my ass off for an A, it was a huge opportunity cost for my other classes but I guess it's worth the A.
Made us call him Coach Dave in class, and gave out star stickers instead of grades. This can either be great fun or incredibly annoying depending upon your state of sleep deprevation. Regardless, Evans is a good teacher who tries to switch it up. He wants everyone to get an A and the class isn't difficult if you do the work. Good course if you want a really basic intro to functional languages.
