Taking CS 1112 with Elizabeth was single-handedly the best choice I've made during my first year at UVA. I've never programmed in my life, and I didn't know what to expect from this course. I had worries that this course might be super difficult or the material would be impossible to understand and fully comprehend, but those worries soon became excitement for what I would learn next and how I could apply everything from if-statements and while loops to my life and how they make things a lot easier. I was also worried about how my instructor would be in terms of personality, as I don't particularly get along with professors that radiate negative vibes. Elizabeth's personality was completely different from that, she was akin to a ray of sunshine and I appreciated that. She encouraged frequent class participation, and even gave out rubber ducks to students who asked or answered questions in class (as an incentive to encourage class participation). I really enjoyed the image manipulation and the clever usage of dictionaries, and I found all of the material to be presented in a manner that was very intuitive and easy to understand. It was her first time teaching the course, but I honestly wouldn't have been surprised if she told us at the end that it was all a joke and that she had been teaching the course for over a decade. If you ever get the chance to take CS 1112 with Elizabeth, don't hesitate to take it! Additionally, the TAs for this course were more than stellar and were always available to answer any questions if there happened to be misunderstandings, and there was a review session before every test (and the final!) to answer any questions and go over past test questions.
