This class was one of the worst courses I've taken at UVa. Although CS 1010 used to be a fun/light class that most people took as an elective back in the day, the department recently revamped the class to make it more challenging/annoying. 5 homework assignments, each of which took a long time to finish (the Excel homework took almost 16 hours to complete if you were using a Mac). Class is not necessary, but office hours are if you want to get points back on the homeworks (her TAs grade very poorly, but she is often willing to recheck your assignment and see if you deserve points back) or figure out what the hell you're doing in class. Professor Griffiths was nice and she clearly meant well, but this class became very annoying/work intensive as soon as we finished the first unit. The course is no longer about Word, Powerpoint, etc., but is now an intro to coding (Python, HTML, JavaScript, etc.) course with a lot of busy work. Stay away from this class, it's not worth taking.
Erin Griffiths is a nice professor, but this class is definitely not worth taking. CS 1010 use to be really easy class back in the good old days, but now they have completely changed it to make it a LOT more difficult. Even though they made the class difficult, they still have a rigid grading system in that you need to get a 95 to get an A (this is higher than other CS classes). I received an A- in this class after a painful experience of spending countless hours on those 5 assignments, and that impossible final project. In addition, the class is taught in Windows, so if you have a mac, you literally need to figure everything out by yourself or go bug Erin to show you. One thing that pissed me off was that she did not have the TAs office hours on her syllabus, nor anywhere else that was accessible to students. She is willing to help, but this class is still a bit much if you're looking for an easy class.
I took this class because I heard it was an easy A, and I was genuinely interested in becoming more comfortable with Microsoft Office and computers in general. This class was definitely not worth taking, as it was actually pretty difficult and a lot of work. The professor was nice and she seemed to care a lot about the class, but she moved so quickly in class that it was difficult to follow. The homework assignments were very difficult, and even though I went to every class and got an A on the midterm, I received B+ in the class. Complaining about a B+ seems trivial, but I came into the class expecting an A so I was pretty disappointed.
