I signed up for this class because I thought it would be nice to have a COLA in my first semester and he talked about his course at Days on the Lawn. The class is about examining American religion through reality television, mostly the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. There are almost-weekly writing assignments called Rabbit Hole Reports where you look into a specific plot point or moment in the clips he complies for each week. They are only a minimum of 200 words, but you can write more. The clips range from 20 minutes to over an hour. It may seem like a lot, but speaking as someone who does not watch reality television, the clips are intriguing! The final project is a presentation that has you speak about three or more scholarly sources on a specific subject with three or four other people. Kevin has guest speakers from different parts of the University speak at the beginning of class. There is one trip to 1515 and another to Shannon. Kevin is a great resource for advising and just talking. He is always willing to give tips about enrolling in classes and is quick to respond to emails. I am glad I took this COLA and it was a great way to spice up my Tuesday afternoons.
This class was really interesting, and Professor Rose was very passionate about the subject. The homework consisted of watching about one hour of clips from various Reality TV shows, and writing about 200 words each week. As well there were a couple of other bigger projects but they were very easy and interesting to complete. Professor Rose was very chill and is a good advisor/professor. The classes are mainly discussion based, and you do receive a participation grade, however it is not very difficult to do well. I would 100% recommend this class, as it was a breath of fresh air from normal classes.
The class is very interesting and really super easy to do well in. All you have to do is complete weekly participation logs, watch posted episodes and write a 200 word report about them every week. They are also a few additional projects towards the end of the semester (an essay that is about 3 pages long, a 10 minute group presentation and a paper response that is around 2 pages). To continue, Professor Rose is super passionate about what he teaches and very laid back. Colas are a great opportunity to get to know your advisors so I highly recommend it. I especially recommend this class if you want to learn more about religion in a class that isn't a religion class. Weirdly, the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City can teach you much more than you think. Overall, I have learned a lot, it was an easy class and one worth taking.
