Dean Adams is a great professor, and I did enjoy the class on Microaggressions. The weekly assignments can be tedious, but it is easier to handle when working in groups. The information taught is extremely relevant, especially to life at UVA, and will help you recognize microaggressions in every day situations. This course is also great because you get any and all of your questions answered regarding courses, scheduling, deadlines, or anything else you could possibly think of. I would definitely recommend taking a COLA because it is a great way to incorporate learning and getting all of your questions answered in a class that only meets once a week.
Not worth the 1 hour credit. It's interesting but if you consider yourself a woke person, this class can be a bit of a bore. In addition, Dean Adams likes to make everyone say one word you thought of the video we just watched and it takes so long and everyone says the same variation of the same adjective. What I'm getting at is that the activities we do in class are not the most thought-provoking/constructive. She grades the homework very hard! Be prepared to put way more than 1 hour a week to get an A.
I took Microaggressions with Dean Adams and have to say it was a very enlightening experience. It's an incredibly informative class and recommend everyone to take a class like this at one point in their lives. The book that you'll have to read outside of class "Microaggressions in Everyday Life" is pretty interesting as well. I do have to say though that the book, as well as the class, does start to get a bit repetitive the further you move on and many begin to become less likely to read it unlike how they did in the start. Also, I would say that this COLA is a lot of work for only one credit since you'll have to turn in a written assignment with a partner every Sunday and even write a 5-page paper as your final. It's not a hard class though so I would still recommend it!
TAKE THIS COLA. The material is interesting and relevant, but after about halfway through the semester it starts to get a little repetitive, as there is only so much you can learn about the topic. But, I would recommend it because of Dean Adams. She is a wonderful faculty advisor. She is super helpful and genuinely cares about the personal/academic lives of each of her students. I took this course on a whim because I heard about Dean Adams, and am so glad I did. It is a guaranteed A as long as you make sure to submit the weekly responses to a handful of questions that go along with a chapter out of the textbook. Sometimes you get to partner with another student in the class. Overall - take this!
I took "Microaggressions" with Dean Adams. She is extremely nice and will have almost all the answers to your questions about advising. As for the topic itself, it was quite interesting. You basically talk about the racism, sexism, and homophobia that occurs in everyday life. The book you use sometimes seemed a little radical and the conversations may be a little dramatic but I did learn a good amount from the course and definitely see these microaggressions more clearly, which is a good thing. Every week there is a chapter of reading and questions along with it, however, you rarely have to read the whole chapter to answer the questions and many are opinion based. She also didn't officially grade all these homeworks but read over them all. There is a final paper, ours was 3-5 pages single spaced. This seemed to be more work than some other COLA's but still an interesting topic.
Class is very interesting. Professor Adams is great, kinda quirky. She is big on attendance and being on time, so be on time. More than half of the class is focused on advising. The material you learn outside of class from the readings. One week will be individual work and the next would be partners. The homework was due on sundays at a weird hour so make sure you do it on the weekday or else you will forget and miss the deadline over the weekend. There is an individual final paper due at the end where you have to write about 5 microaggression you have heard throughout the semester 6 pages single spaced! So, I would write down the microaggressions you hear throuhgout the semester and that will help you write your paper at the end of the semester.
