Probably the best COLA you could possibly take. Dean Seidel is so sweet and I couldn't be happier she's my advisor for the time being. She really cares about her students and would often bring food and have conversations with each person. Most of your grade comes from just being in class (which is very easy for a 1x a week meeting). The only assignment is a reflective paper at the end where you talk about what mindfulness practices were most useful for you. She's also really great at advising. Take this COLA. #tCFF24
My absolute favorite class! Dean Seidel is one of the nicest humans you will ever meet. Her class (1 hour 15 minutes meeting once a week in the afternoon) was my saving grace. We meditated and did yoga as the class was all about mindfulness. She made each class so fun and interesting. She really cares about you and this class is essentially a guaranteed A if you show up and care at all. Not to mention she become your advisor and she really does know how to advise (i.e she actually knows your schedule and you as a person) unlike some other advisors. 10/10 class
Dean Seidel is a great teacher! I took her "What Makes Us Tick?" COLA and thought it was so interesting, not only because I was interested in learning about the cardiovascular system, but also because Dean Seidel was so positive and passionate about the subject and really tried to help us learn more about it. In terms of the work in this class, there are three papers (about blood, blood vessels, and the heart) and one presentation. All assignments are very easy and graded fairly!
LOVED this class. Sandy is the best professor to have your COLA with, particularly if you're interested in the health or science. Remember, when you take a COLA, you get not only a professor but also an advisor. For me, that fact made this class well worth it. Sandy is an amazing person to have as your advisor because she's not only a biology professor but also an assistant dean in the College, so she's really knowledgable. She also genuinely cares about you and wants to help. I've heard of so many people having terrible advisors - that will NOT be the case if you have Sandy.
Overall, the class was so interesting. I learned a LOT. We did a lot of great things outside of class, too. We went to the career center and met with pre-med advisors, Sandy hosted a little party for us, and she took us to lunch at the Garden Room (a professor-only dining space with the BEST food you can get on Grounds). Take your COLA with Sandy!
Dean Seidel is amazing! Loved this class--was able to understand the cardiovascular system much better than any bio class or bio textbook.
This class takes on a style of lecture, but your grade is primarily based on attendance. There are 3 groups projects and 3 papers; and the papers are fairly easy to write after you've done the group projects. The last class was so much fun--Dean Seidel baked for us and we each shared an article that we found related to something we discussed in class. Definitely would recommend taking this class if you can!
The "What Makes Us Tick" COLA was the best class ever! Dean Seidel is very energetic and passionate about the course and also a great academic advisor for anyone interested in the sciences. There are three papers and three presentations throughout the whole semester. Each of them being on the heart, blood vessels, and blood. This class is a really easy A if you show up to class and do the assigned work.
