Professor Freedman was an amazing instructor and person as well. This one credit course was pretty chill. There are one or two readings that you have to do and the essays are often only about one page. There's only one quiz a few weeks in that was very easy. It was open note and open book. The best thing about this class is having Professor Freedman as an advisor. He prioritizes everyone in the classes' needs and there to give you advice. Some of the other COLA classes I've heard that the professor is bad at giving tips for UVA but Professor Freedman is different! Definitely recommend taking it your first semester at UVA!
Easy class, it wont be offered for at least another 2 years. Freedman is very biased towards the Democratic Party and will agree with any progressive statement. If you're a liberal or if you're willing to keep your conservative/libertarian ideals under wraps, it's a very fun class that delves into some political thought without requiring any extracurricular work.
I loved Freedman's Politics of Food COLA. He is extremely helpful and available as an advisor; genuinely interested in his students. The books (only 2) and articles we read were fascinating, but if you didn't have time to read the 2-3 chapters (50-100 pages) a week, it was completely fine. We mainly discussed it in class and he showed a few slides. Only grade comes from participation and a 6-8 page pager at end of semester. Great class, would recommend it to anyone.
