First off, Professor Shutt is great. She really helped ease the transition into my first year at UVA; I found her much more accessible and familiar than other professors here. In terms of the class, there were some exciting moments (like when Shutt brought in food for everyone from the Charlottesville Farmer's Market and when we went on a class trip to the downtown mall for lunch together), but most classes were pretty basic. Some readings were more interesting than others, discussions could be a little dry, and the weekly reading quizzes (which I will say didn't actually happen every week) were kind of a drag. Overall: great professor, some-what interesting course material, easy A.
I went into this course thinking it would be more centered on different types of food, cooking in different cultures, and eating food. Instead, I got a very reading heavy course with long, and personally not intriguing, texts. Prof Shutt is very nice and does a good job to help adjust first-years into UVA, bringing in specialists to help talk about housing a career development, but the classes in which we discuss the material really drag, especially on a Friday morning. If you want a class that has out there readings about weird foods in random cultures, then this is a good class for you. However, if your looking for a class that's centered around cooking and eating, or learning to make different foods, then avoid this class.
I highly recommend this COLA with Professor Shutt! She is a very caring advisor and spends a balanced amount of time between the course topics and advising topics. She is good at facilitating in class discussion and encourages every student to share with the class. Also, as long as you put decent thought into your writing assignments, skim or read each reading before class (for the reading quiz), and participate in the in class discussions, you will do well in the class.
Interesting class! There are readings every class which you should make sure to at least skim through because there's a reading quiz at the beginning of class. The readings were interesting and easy to understand. There were five writing assignments and each of them were rather easy to knock out in a few hours. The final was a "food narrative" which allowed you to write about literally anything food related and I had a lot of fun writing it. Professor Schutt is great and would bring us food a lot of the time. Overall, would recommend!
Professor Shutt is the best! I took her Food and Culture COLA which was my favorite class all semester and I looked forward to going every week! There's weekly readings which can sometimes be long but I found them very interesting! There's also about 4 or 5 writing assignments but each is only around 2 pages and fun to write. She grades very easily and is very approachable and willing to help. Awesome class and professor!
