CHIN 5830

Kinney is this middle-aged hipster from Michigan who is obsessed with ancient China, and she teaches fantastic courses in Classical Chinese (fall--prose; spring--Tang poetry). Each night for homework we prepare our own translations of a text, and in class we go over them word by word. This sounds boring, but her imagination is incredible and it really brings Classial Chinese to life. One Classical course is required for the major, but both are fantastic. Kinney can be somewhat awkward in 1-on-1 situations, but she will like you if you show an interest in the material, come prepared, and ask questions!

Kinney is amazing! She knows so much about the subject! She gets distracted really easily but her stories are always entertaining. The exams are just memorization and super easy.

Excellent course. If you read the material carefully you could actually learn lot about how China maintain it's social order various types of approaches from carrot to stick

This is definitely one of the best classes I've taken. The course material is very interesting, although you probably need some sort of a Chinese background. Professor Kinney is extremely funny and extremely laid back, and it seems like she only wants to give A's.
