I LOVED chu lao shi. Although it is true that fall 2013 she gave a lot of homework and was a tough grader, she listened to our reviews and I am with her spring 2013 for CHIN 2020 and we no longer have homework everyday. If you are only taking Chinese for the language requirement and don't really enjoy it, don't take it with Chu lao shi. but if you actually want to improve your chinese and have a fun time while doing it, take it with her. If you put the effort in you can end up with an A, I did.
This class was far more difficult than necessary. The structure of the class: 4 consecutive days of dictation where getting a 4/5 is above average. First two days, workbook stuff is due that takes about an hour, plus pure copies of the reading that takes another half hour to copy. One day free of workbook and summary, one more day free of summary but a horrible workbook assignment.
This class will take the most time out of your day, regardless of what your other classes are. Chu is a hard grader, but deceptively nice in class. I've even heard tell that while she's nicer than Chen in class, Chen is an easier grader.
