I LOVVVEDDDD 赵老师 (Prof. Zhao)!! she was extremely welcoming and supportive not only on an academic level, but also on an emotional level (both in terms of transitioning to college *and* coming to terms with a chinese american identity). this class will be very challenging if you've never learned chinese characters; the prof will def support you, but it will take learning a LOT of out-of-class studying and learning supplementary vocabulary to catch yourself up. if you've gone to chinese school or taken a chinese class in high school before, you'll pretty much be fine as long as you stay on top of vocab.
i'm only half-chinese so i got an ear for mandarin from my mom, but i never went to chinese school and have no extended Chinese family in america. (i took chinese in high school but that only imprvoed my reading and writing). in comparison to most other students, my listening skills were behind but I could still get thru class for the most part (btw the classes are in full mandarin and all the assignment instructions are given in chinese). it was nowehere near impossible. because attending class basically forces you to practice 150 minutes of active input of chinese every week, my chinese has improved faster than it ever has in my entire life. i am truly so grateful for this class.
This class is a TON of work. There is tingxie every day, which means memorizing like 30 characters a night for dictation. There is also workbook homework due, which also takes a while. The class moves twice as fast as 1010, and is basically 1010 and 1020 in on semester. If you put in the work, most people end up with a good grade. Zhao laoshi is an awesome teacher! She's funny, and really cares about you doing well and learning Chinese.
