I took four years of Mandarin in high school and ended up placing into 1020, but I took this class on special permissions due to a variety of scheduling conflicts. Still, I learned a lot of new vocabulary in this class, and by the end, I was learning entirely new things every week - so it's safe to say this is a pretty intensive course, but it really isn't that hard as long as you're committed to daily homework and practice. Gao Laoshi was an incredibly good teacher and very accommodating. The Chinese department agreed on an attendance policy that deducted 6 points per missed class this semester, but there was one day where I slept through class & she just let it slide because I'd talked to her about some mental health problems. Similarly, she often let me turn in late assignments and was overall a really easy grader and very accommodating. She is incredibly kind and a talented teacher and I enjoyed every minute of this class. Definitely, if you need to take CHIN1010, I would recommend taking it with Gao.
Gao Laoshi is a great teacher and she is always trying to make the class fun. The workload was definitely more than any of my other classes considering the class was everyday, but by the end of it I realized how much I learned so it paid off. You will definitely have to pay attention in class because the course moves quickly and she will randomly call on you to make sure you're paying attention, but all the chinese profs do that.
Gao laoshi is the best. This course is intensive and challenging but gao laoshi and her grader are super lax as long as you are doing the work. This course is demanding, and having never learned chinese before I learned a lot more than I thought I could in a semester but it comes with all kinds of work. Gao laoshi loves enthusiastic participators in class, but she will snarl if you step out of line.
Gao Laoshi is a wonderful lady who cares very much about her class. She is a solid teacher but her class definitely requires a consistent amount of work. There is homework every night for the 5 classes a week and a mini-quiz every day. While I am learning a lot, the class definitely deserves to be four credits. It's really not a hard class, just a lot of work. I've had her for CHIN 1010 and 1020. 1020 is where it really amps up. Altogether, I'd recommend taking this course because you get to learn a language well and it's not that bad if you go in with a good attitude.
Gao Laoshi is a fantastic teacher. As a new student who merely had an interest in Chinese, I was quite lost when I joined her class compared to some of the other kids. She helped me through office hours and at other times during a stressful first year. She understands the stress of being a student, has a great sense of humor, and is a very compassionate teacher. The University's Chinese department is robust, but I have to recommend Gao Laoshi among all of the teachers. It can be quite some work, but you will not regret it one bit.
Gao laoshi is seriously the best. Although the course moves somewhat fast, she's always willing to make accommodations and help you as long as you talk to her and show her that you're making an effort! The homework is very tedious because it's every day, but every intro language class has daily homework and quizzes, so it's not that big of a deal. Also, she always makes jokes and keeps the class really lively even though it's right in the morning. Definitely recommend her - she's a great teacher!
