Professor Gunnoe is probably one of the best professors I've ever had! I never took AP Chem or any form of higher level chemistry and I was still able to get an A in this class by following his powerpoints and reading the textbook. MasteringChem is not bad at all and it is pretty relevant to what is on the tests and what's being taught in class. All in all I have to say that I enjoyed this class, the professor's humor, and the laid-back dynamic. Definitely would recommend this class, it made chemistry more entertaining and less stressful!
Prof Gunnoe is a must take professor for intro Chem. He is very open about his life and cares about his students doing well. His personal stories helped me stay engaged in class. He works very hard to make the material interesting. Additionally, he did not close the MasteringChem assignments until the last day of class, which was very helpful. All in all, great professor to have, and I would highly recommend.
If you need to take CHEM 1410, take it with Professor Gunnoe! Although lectures can be dry due to the content being covered, Gunnoe really tries to make it as interesting as possible. He is really good at explaining topics during lecture, but if you need extra help, he makes himself extremely available outside of class. I found the first exam to be a little tricky, mostly because I focused more on mathematical problems instead of concepts, but once you know what you need to study, you’re going to be just fine. His exams are extremely fair (you’ll take 3 exams and a final). Homework isn’t difficult as long as you keep up with; there really isn’t a reason why you shouldn’t be getting a solid A/A+ on each assignment. Weekly quizzes were also easy as long as you take notes during lecture and read the textbook as needed. Since he drops the lowest 3 quiz grades, a lot of people end up with a 100 quiz average. I ended up with an A+ in this class despite not doing super well on the first exam. He was extremely generous and provided an “freebie” extra credit question on the final, which was already pretty easy as long as you review your previous exams. Highly recommend Gunnoe’s class if you’re looking to get something out of chemistry. He’s an awesome professor and is doing some awesome research, too. I wish he were teaching CHEM 1420!
Professor Gunnoe is a very nice guy with incredibly boring lectures. It took 2 minutes of listening to his pleasing voice for me to zone out and I didn’t retain any information from a single lecture. He tried his best to insert a joke here and there but 60 seconds of humor didn’t make up for 74 minutes of extremely dry information being thrown at you. I didn’t realize how much I needed to read the book until too late so I definitely suggest keeping up with reading. Also keep up with the homework. It’s not that hard but it is lengthy so don’t put it off until the end of the semester. I am not a sciency person so this class was a huge bore and I don’t suggest it to those who don’t love chemistry.
Gunnoe's lectures are very dry. He tries to make them fun, but I ended up falling asleep half the time. I had to read the textbook to learn everything. The homework was easy and due at the end of the semester. The test were hard just because he puts trick questions on there. Overall the class was pretty easy but just be aware of the lectures.
Dr. Gunnoe is hands down the BEST professor to take chem with. His lectures are funny and entertaining, and he makes it easy to understand the material. He's also very approachable and I definitely recommend going to his office hours. There are 3 tests and weekly quizzes, with the lowest 3 quizzes being dropped. They are all extremely fair as they come directly from his lectures, and reading the textbook is not required. The homeworks are online on mastering chemistry and some can take a decent amount of time to complete, but all the homeworks aren't due until the end of the semester. I ended up with an A+ and honestly am disappointed that he won't be teaching Chem 1420.
This class was made all the better with Professor Gunnoe at the helm. We all love Professor Gunnoe, who makes class funny and interesting, has great stories, and is EXTREMELY fair when he tests. He is very conceptual, preferring concepts and principles to blind calculation, which is absolutely fantastic. The tests can be a bit challenging, but once you get used to the style, it will be ok, just make sure to study! Professor Gunnoe is THE guy to take it with. At first I was nervous because he hadn't taught one before, but I came out with no regrets. I wish he was teaching CHEM 1420 next semester too!!!
