ANTH 3010 or 3020 are required for ANTH majors, and while I haven't yet taken 3020, I can confidently say that 3010 with Prof. Durham was not only a great choice but a great experience as well. Durham is incredibly well-read and involved within the field of anthropology and I was blown away by just how much she knew about what seemed like everything. This does lead to frequent tangents and runoffs during her very informally structured lectures that progress in a roughly chronological pattern through the developments and various schools of thought within the field of anthropology, but I'd say that they really add to the character of the class. Readings are heavy, and in my opinion most of them are necessary to really understand what Durham spitballs in class, and I found myself taking significantly more notes at home over the readings than while listening to Durham; however, in class she fills in the gaps along the way and explains concepts, authors, anth developments in easier to understand terms. It's easy to "fall behind" on the subject matter as class participation, a midterm essay, and a final essay are the only grades, so it is important to keep up with everything to avoid having to reread large amounts of course material while writing the essays.
Teacher: Chill, accommodating with SDAC Accommodations. She's funny and interesting to listen to.
Work: Weekly discussion board, but Durham switches it up so that one week you post, one week you reply, one week you lead the in-class discussion, and you get one week off. The discussion board is very useful when it comes time to write the papers. There are 2 papers: 1 midterm and one final. You get about a week/10 days to write them, and there is a multitude of prompts to choose from. Weekly reading of 30-60 pages of Anth theoretical papers and research.
Class: Mainly lectures given from a sheet of notes she has. No powerpoints or other visual aids. She goes over the reading and has some class participation. On Thursdays we had in-class discussion that always went well.
I recommend this class with this professor. It's been pretty easy and it's a good way to knock out your ANTH 3010 requirement.
