Professor Carta is a great lecturer; he has a great intuition for the material that he teaches, and his lectures are very well organized. The course isn't really that textbook-based, even though you can learn some of what he teaches in class. Makes very useful handouts to study off of, and extremely helpful with office hours. Problem sets are only a few problems, but they can get VERY lengthy if you don't understand everything that's going on.
Carta is an EXTREMELY knowledgeable professor and really understands the material. He goes through some ideas rather quickly assuming you understand basic things and the entire class is a bit fast paced. The tests are VERY difficult because of the time constraint, so do lots of practice problems to get prepared. Do not wait until the last minute to do the project, start as early as you can! The TA session was sometimes helpful, but Carta's usually better. The book was not THAT helpful, only for the problems but the reading sometimes helped clarify things, not by much though. The overall class was just difficult for me to grasp so get help ASAP if the material is not understandable at first! Goooooddd luck if you decide to take this!
Professor Carta may be the best overall professor in our department. His train of thought is very logical and easy to follow. The work can be a bit challenging at times later in the class, but for the most part is pretty straightforward. I liked how most of the problems seemed very "real world applicable" and felt meaningful. Carta (and this class) is the reason why you want to be a Chemical Engineer.
This class is difficult, which should serve as a heads-up if you intend to become a ChE major, because it is the easiest CHE class available. However, difficulty aside, it was very enjoyable and actually kind of fun at times. Watch out for the group project, though. It's tough, so don't wait until the last minute to get started.
Problem sets are very time consuming; tests test your ability to work under a HUGE time pressure; biggest complaint with Carta is that in the beginning of the class he did a lot of examples, while towards the end of the class he did relatively few. there is a group project but it's easy and boosts your grade
