Prof. Metcalf is great--his lectures are very interesting and I rarely had difficulty focusing. However, his exams can be very specific (if you don't have the exact word that he is looking for, then your answer is wrong). And sometimes it's hard to tell where he is going with his lectures. The discussion section was amazing, though. Julie is fantastic!!! She was great at helping us figure out exactly what Metcalf was talking about and keep everything straight in our notes.
Minimal work for the class. Not advised for anthro majors. Metcalf critiques Frazer for compiling the exotic and grouping it all together, then commits the exact same mistake in his own class. A stereotypical "anthro" class, little room for discussion and exams that leave no room for critical thinking. A surface level introduction to theory, but nothing substantive. Metcalf was also not very willing to meet outside of class. Seems like a nice man who likes what he's teaching, but its better for people who aren't serious about anthropology.
Professor Metcalf is a fantastic lecturer. He's engaging, entertaining and very funny. One of the few professors i've seen to get applauded at the end of the semester. The subject is interesting and gives you a different perspective on what really defines "religion". Tests (midterm and final only) are pretty tricky and all short-answer, but the short paper is a breeze.
lectures are interesting, but he flows out all of his ideas and you don't know what is relevant and what is not. The tests make the idea of not knowing what to note down much worse because they are specific and confusing. The readings are on the whole boring and random. Annoying class, don't recomend.
Okay so here's the deal. GO TO CLASS. Simple as that. You probably don't want to miss too many days of this class. Why? On one hand, his lectures are actually REALLY interesting, he's a great story teller. On the other, pretty much most of his exam questions come from his lectures, and he tends to ask some pretty specific questions. If you're in class actively listening, you'll do well in this class. The readings more or less back up what he's saying (the book was written by him), so use the reading to reinforce what he talks about in class--it helps. GO TO CLASS AND YOU'LL DO FINE.
This was a very interesting class that I thoroughly enjoyed. Just be careful about coming into the class thinking it is going to be a class about viewing major religions in an anthropological way. Rather, it is more interesting and explores religions specific to certain areas. Metcalf is a great professor and I love his lectures. Tests are pretty easy but can get tricky. Jut be careful to not just study his list of important terms, most often the test really doesn't include those specific IDs, so study readings and lectures but use the terms as a guide.
Metcalf is entertaining but it can be difficult to figure out what is important in his lectures. Going to class is pretty essential because the midterm and final touch on specific things he talks about in lecture. The reading can be boring but it is very minimal. There is one paper that is pretty easy. He also grades on a curve. Decent class to fulfill non-western perspectives requirement. alessandro was my TA, had no idea how to translate the lecture/communicate what he was thinking.
