This class is difficult but doable. I attended the TA office hours every single week in addition to Will's, and I would have gone to both TAs if I could. The TAs were more helpful content wise, but his office hours count towards participation points which are important. Try to raise your hand every class if possible, the participation is actually graded and not just a free 10/10 for being there (I answered questions about once a week and attended office hours twice a week and still didn't get full credit). Study the case in detail, making sure that you can define every single word and explain its relationship to the issue. Know the normal ranges for any vitals taken and what it means for them to be abnormal. Understand how the issue has progressed to that point physiologically, and how the treatment works to reverse this. For the weekly quizzes, you don't just need to know the content but you need to understand it in detail. Be able to describe every graph he shows, and how that graph would change if any of the factors were influenced. Will tests more conceptually, there is little use in memorizing the slides if you cannot explain them. #tCFS24
This class is not easy. The asynchronous nature made it difficult for me to meet people in the course, so I wasn't able to form a study group with people. If this class is in person, definitely make a study group!! The course was divided into quarters, and the grading system consisted of weekly quizzes and an exam after three weekly quizzes. To determine the grade for each quarter, the average of three quizzes was compared to the exam and the highest score was factored in of the two. The quizzes were only ten questions and test how well you conceptually understand the information, so make sure you study thoroughly. It is not just recalling the information you learned in class word-for-word, as you have to understand the graphical relationships of different things and apply it.
You really have to put a lot of time into this class to do well, so be prepared. It's helpful to learn some of the information before you get to class.
Dr. Guilford has been one of my favorite BME professors. He teaches 2101 so well and in a way that makes you remember concepts clearly way after his course ends. He definitely expects you to put in the work, just know that you need to make office hours a priority and ALL of them (TA office hours too). He gives out weekly quizzes so be sure to start studying for them the day of or day after lecture to retain everything well.
