This class is incredibly boring. Like fall asleep every class kind of boring. That said, doing the readings isn't wholly necessary and the only graded things were 2 in class exams (which you could do online and he gives helpful study guides for) and a community action project thing. It does fulfill some helpful requirements but prepare to be bored to death.
Sicoli is awesome!! I loved his lecture style and you can tell he is extremely passionate about that he is talking about—especially when he briefly covers linguistics. He gives you study guides before each exams and sticks to them! If you fill them out, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t get an A. I found some of the readings interesting, but some could also be a little dry. Textbook is extremely comprehensive. You don’t necessarily have to do the readings to do well though. Just pay attention during lecture. Honestly would retake this class if I could—I really enjoyed it!!!
I took this class to fulfill my non-western requirement. It's super easy but also pretty boring. We pretty much just learned anecdotal information to stuff I already knew by being a citizen in society. The exams are super easy if you do the study guides because they are practically the same. The last exam is a bit different, however. I only ever read the first chapter of the textbook and never paid attention in lecture and am either going to end up with an A or an A+ (an A+ in this class is a 99 and above), so take that how you will. You get 1% extra credit on your overall grade for doing the course evaluation on collab. 3 exams 25% each and participation in discussion 25%.
