Hantman did not structure this class as well as it could have been, but you learn so much more than what is on the exam. Take the opportunity to learn from this man- he is such a character, and I often found myself writing down funny or insightful things he said during class than the material we were learning about.
The material was interesting, but the lectures were VERY difficult to follow. I generally never took notes during lecture because Professor Hantman has a tendency to simply ramble on about seemingly random things, and lectures often were not pertinent to the exam. Do the readings and make good use of your discussion section and TA, and you should be fine- honestly, lectures are unimportant. Didn't really like how the grading was set up - 70% of the grade was exams, which were all true/false, fill in the blank, and a couple short answers (you barely need to do any writing). I managed an A without paying attention to lecture; just listen to what the TA tells you is important, and you'll be fine. A very typical introductory course.
I am not being mean. I HATED this class. Please save yourselves. The first exam was worth 30% of our grade and everyone did poorly where he had to curve it 10%. In addition, he gives out exams that are entirely true/false, short answer, etc. The lecture is super disorganized, and you never know what the ___ is going on. Extremely unstructured, and a waste of time. However, if you don’t go to lecture, than you still don’t know what’s going on but you’re 2 times even more screwed over. Textbook and readings were fine, but exams were unfair. Exams also make up 70% of your grade, and discussion being 30%. 10/10 do NOT recommend.
You don't really need to go to lectures because Hantman would just kinda ramble on about random things and didn't talk about much that wasn't in the readings. Just do all of the readings and be active in your discussion and it'll be an easy class. My TA was John Favini and he was great, explained everything really well and led interesting discussions. It was a really interesting class and honestly I learned a lot, but more from readings and discussion than from lecture.
Easiest class I've taken this year, hands down. As long as you do most of the readings and generally don't fall asleep in class, you'll do fine. His lectures are disjointed and full of stories that don't usually apply to the exams. The exams have been fill in the blank (with a word bank) and true/false, so there's not even any writing in this class. Hantman is a weird dude, but the TA's know and acknowledge that, and are super helpful with explaining what you actually need to know for the class.
