Professor Igoe is a great professor! He is a great lecturer, and very easy to pay attention to. He's extremely passionate about the subject that he teaches, and is so in-tune with the current developments in his field. I must receive three emails from him a week with links to articles or events related to his class with messages like "this article is related to [whatever we're learning]! You should check it out!" There are two take-home open-book tests throughout the semester, with a final in-class (I think; he hasn't officially said so yet). Honestly, the first open-book test was very time-consuming, but I felt like I knew so much about anthropology by the end of it. I think that way of testing is good for an intro class because there's so much info to be covered, and that makes studying incredibly difficult. Overall, would recommend this class!!
Overall, pretty good class! Professor Igoe is so intelligent and passionate about his field and you can really tell during lectures. My advice: Go to lecture (the lecture slides themselves aren't very helpful, really listen), do the readings (take notes or at least highlight), and visit during office hours if you are confused (and you probably will be but won't feel like going to office hours). The discussion section is absolutely worthless, but you have to go. There are two tests, a mid term and a final, and they're both take home. They both take a LONG time to finish, but if you're familiar with the readings and take good notes at lecture then you will be fine. The class is easy and interesting, the only hard part is the time is takes to finish the tests. I would definitely recommend!
Loved this class. Was not all that interested in the material at first, but enjoyed it as it got going. Professor Igoe was the man and I could not have asked for a better class to take in my first semester at UVA. Highly recommend this class with Igoe to anybody in the future. We had a take home midterm and take home final (open notes and book) that both combined for 70% of our final grade. 15% was for our discussion that I showed up to all but one and got a 98% for. The final 15% was the better grade of our mid term and our final. Great class that is a simple grade if you put the time in!
This course is very reading heavy, and if you don't read what is assigned, you will not do well on the midterm or the final. All tests were take home, which was great, and he also let us use our textbook and other materials. So, if you don't get a decent grade in this class, you just didn't do the work. He is also very good at lecturing, but he doesn't write much on the lecture slides, so you really have to take good notes. Overall, I thought the class was interesting and would recommend it.
Professor Igoe was great, you can tell he really loves what he is teaching, and he is a really dynamic speaker. The workload for this class was very minimal, about a chapter of reading each week. The grade came from take home, open book midterm and final, and participation in discussion. Overall, this was a really interesting and relatively easy class.
Igor is a great professor! He is a very good lecturer and tells you pretty much exactly what will be on the tests and what to study. If you don't do well on the tests, it is because you haven't gone to class or didn't study what he told you to study. He's a really nice guy and is always willing to explain things after class or during office hours. If you go to office hours before a test, it's kind of like a little study session with other students. He's an interesting guy to get to know. I recommend this class! It taught me a lot of stuff that I had never been exposed to.
Don't be fooled by what previous years tell you about this course. The tests are not take-home. This is not an easy GPA booster class. Igoe obviously cares a lot about anthropology and current events, but his exams often include random questions that weren't emphasized in lecture, discussion, or even his office hours. Speaking of discussion, it's pointless but attendance is mandatory. Neither of the TAs were good. One was anti-American and racist towards white people while the other was so quiet no one past the first row could hear anything. It was definitely not worth waking up at 8 AM twice a week.
This course was fantastic! Professor Igoe really knows his stuff. He clearly cares about the material, and he's great at explaining it to students. He's very fair and approachable - even though it was a big lecture class, I never felt afraid speaking up. He encouraged students to participate in class and to come to office hours as well. I would recommend taking anything you can with Professor Igoe. He'll push you to learn, and support you to do your best.
Grade is three tests, each 25%, plus the discussion section grade for the final 25%. I felt the tests were very fair. I saw another reviewer said the tests asked about things that weren't covered in class, but that was not my experience at all. If you went to class, did the readings, and studied for tests, then everything on the tests were straightforward. If you struggled on the tests, you just didn't do the work. This is not an easy A class, but if you show up and put in a little effort, you will do well and learn a lot.
There only assignments were readings, which were pretty light and complemented lectures. Discussion section was a waste of time, but mandatory. Avoid Saad Quasem at all costs - he only made the material more confusing, he said off-topic and actually incorrect things, and he bullied students. He really was a damper on what was otherwise an excellent course.
