I was slightly concerned about taking this course because a lot of reviews about Galloway say that her tests are too difficult/confusing--do not let that deter you from this class! I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone with an interest in envi. science or the less genetic aspects of bio. Galloway is a wonderful lecturer and it is obvious that she really loves what she is teaching. She is very approachable and will take the time to explain things to you if you are confused. As for her tests- you need to go to lecture every day and take notes straight through. I never bothered with the readings. Tests really aren't that difficult at all as long as your notes are good and you understand all the concepts on the slides. Probably one the best classes I've taken at UVA so far, to be honest.
Overall, I really enjoyed this class because pretty much all of the material was interesting and very informative. You can tell Professor Galloway really loves teaching this class, and so she presents the lectures really well and usually has an abundance of examples and graphs to illustrate various concepts, which makes them easy to understand. There is no final exam, just three tests, one being on the last day of class, a conservation summary paper, and quizzes which are not graded but used to indicate participation. I also only opened the book once because most of the test comes from her lectures. With all of that said, her tests are difficult and really test your knowledge on how to apply the concepts to various graphs and situations so this is not an easy A class. However, i highly reccommend it if you are interested in the material and Professor Galloway is great!
I absolutely LOVED this class, but it may not be for all biology majors. Most concepts are presented through case studies and graphs. There is not much memorization, but you have to grasp overall concepts and be able to explain them on the exams. There is very little work outside of studying for the tests and Professor Galloway is very friendly and willing to help the students out in any way possible.
Last year was her first year teaching this course, and people had mixed feelings about her class. Her tests are somewhat confusing at first, and nobody finished on time for the first test. Overall, really interesting material, and she's a really nice professor who is passionate about what she teaches. Notes from class are crucial since her test is based a lot on what she says in class. Also make sure you analyze each image carefully because her test focuses largely on interpreting figures.
