Yes, this is a difficult class. Do not take if you don't like science. Personally, I LOVED this class!! Kittlesen is a great lecturer and his tests really do test if students have a very deep understanding of material presented IN CLASS AND IN THE BOOK. I suppose this could be considered a hard class but mostly you just have to read and study. Use the book website for extra help, it is really good and has video tutorials.
Slides are posted online previous to class, so they can be printed off to take notes on during class. Dave uses interesting examples to explain topics, from his own experience as well as current events. 4 exams given, each counting for 25% of the grade. Exams come from lecture notes and textbook readings. To do well in this class you have to study from both, paying attention to concepts rather than factual information. Do not memorize facts, but rather learn concepts and be able to apply to different situations.
Bio is bio. And when Kittlesen says that you'll be expected to apply knowledge rather than merely memorize facts, that means that you have to be able to apply knowledge AS WELL AS memorize every corner of the text. The lecture is pretty much useless, unless Kittlesen presents experimentals that are not presented in the book. Those always appear on exams. Exams are extremely tricky; it does help, however, that he posts previous exams, at least for the first 3 midterms. A rewarding class, but not enjoyable by any means.
Intro Bio is definitely challenging. You really have to know the material in order to apply it in a new way on the test. Although Dr. Kittlesen makes the lectures interesting, he focuses on things that are not emphasized in the textbook, so I think that it's important to go to class. Besides, you get extra credit points for iclicker participation. Nevertheless, the tests are tricky and some of the questions seem to come out of nowhere. It is a rewarding class, but not a truly fun class.
I didn't find Kittlesen to be nearly as hard as some suggest. His tests are all multiple choice and very straightforward. Just go to class and read the chapters he assigns and you'll be fine. Really.
Having said that, take this class! I learned a LOT. Kittlesen likes to inject his own work as a case study, which some find egotistical, but I find I can appreciate a subject better when I know how it's used to save lives.
