Seidel is a nice person, outside of the professor role. inside the role, her lectures are extremely non-linear and derivative. It is two-thirds into the semester and she has already deviated the class so much that both the syllabus and the textbook readings are pretty much useless, as she almost always wants allot of detail where the book gives little and vice versa. Also, she is a VERY hard grader, to the point of being extremely picky about what details you leave in and out in each individual sentence. I must emphasize, this is NOT a typical biology class—this is more of a mindfulness seminar mixed with bio trivia and a harsh grade at the end. If you are someone that likes linear progression in your lecture, do not, I repeat, DO NOT take this class. This will not be for you.
This a great class for an introduction to human biology and disease. Take it if you're interested and want an easy A. My best advise for getting an A is to GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. She pretty much tells you what you should write about in your papers. These papers are one page and there are several of them. Also all her tests including the final are open-book because she doesn't really believe in memorization.
Honestly, this class is a really great way to get some of the basics of human anatomy and diseases. Professor Seidel really wants to to take away knowledge from her class, and she's pretty interesting in her lectures. For her homeworks, she goes over it with you before you turn it in, and for papers she also goes over what she is looking for during office hours. SERIOUSLY, GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. Super helpful and if every person went, the grade distribution for this class would be much higher. Also she's a nice lady, get to know her!
Professor Seidel was a very active professor who liked interaction and moving around. She takes a lot of pride in spreading knowledge to her students. The bulk (40%) of our grade was based on participation which was if you showed up to class, did practice quizzes, etc. There were 2 take home open note quizzes and 2 papers (1 page each) that also issued into our grade. Our final was a 40 question open note quiz and a 1-2 page final paper. VISIT OFFICE HOURS FOR ALMOST PERFECT SCORES ON PAPERS
From the reviews of this class I thought it would be a good class to take however Sandy, although being very funny and nice, does not teach in a very linear fashion and having not taken bio since freshman year in high school I was lost at times. If you choose to take this course read the course material and don't leave it for the end.
I love Seidel and if you're not a big science person this is the perfect class. She makes it simple to understand the processes and she gives you so many chances to get an A. All the quizzes are take home so you can take them when you feel you're ready and you get a chance to revise all your papers multiple times. I loved the class and it's an easy A.
This class was great. I learned a lot, and I felt like the knowledge was very practical, even for a non-nurse/pre-health person. Professor Seidel is extremely enthusiastic, cares so much about her students, and makes science exciting and accessible to everyone. She is a great resource for first years, and she incorporates a little bit of advising into her class. There were a few quizzes, tests, and a final, all of which I thought were challenging but very fair. Definitely take this class if you are looking to fill a science requirement and actually want to learn something.
