I enjoyed this course. Prof Patterson does an excellent job of communicating his expectations for the course, due dates, and other relevant information, whether it be in class or through email. The class was organized, yet allowed for flexibility which was nice. Patterson did a great job at leading class discussions. In fact, one of the things I really admired about him was that he commended creativity. On papers and during class, he encouraged everyone to think deeply about issues and express their opinions.
One thing to note about this class is that it is in Rouss-Robertson Hall, and Prof Patterson is a professor in the Comm school. Patterson is a great guy and gives feedback (especially on writing style) that will help later on, but it is extremely important to get on his good side. This can be done by showing up to class and participating, and putting effort into the assignments. This is not a difficult class, but do not blow it off when he assigns work.
Robert Patterson is absolutely, hands down, the man. Got an A in this class and I recommend it to everyone who is even remotely interested in mostly 20th century history. He would regularly bring snacks to class, his grading was incredibly fair, he was engaging, made his expectations clear, and held class outside on nice days. The class (Great Historical Speeches) consisted of 5 brief essays (usually 2 pages long) and was incredibly fair and easy to accomplish. 10/10 would recommend.
