One of the worst classes I have taken. Kent is never prepared for his lectures, spends half his time thinking about what to say, and no one in his class knows what is going on. He also grades extremely hard, and takes 5-6 weeks to grade one paper! The amount of work you put into this class is unjustified, and this class really does suck alot. Try and take with someone else.
The most painful class I've ever taken in UVA. There is numerous reading and writing to do to receive credits for this course. Wayland also grades harshly (and due to amount of grading he has to do, very slowly) on the assignments so you feel the value-to-work ratio is super low. Worst of all, you feel that you're not learning anything from this class, although it's supposed to be an interesting and useful topic. Avoid if you can.
Pretty awful, but then again so are most STS classes. If for some reason you're really into figuring out your "cultural location" by examining others (essentially anthropology), take this course. Otherwise, try to take another one, as this one is pretty mundane. The readings are boring, the assignments are vague, and nothing is graded in a timely manner. O yeah, and you meditate for 5 minutes at the beginning of every class...one time we did it with raisins...it's weird.
He isn't a good professor. He grades harshly on all papers and takes points off for unnecessary things such as using wording that he doesn't like. My only recommendation is that if you want an easy STS class stay away from his as it is a lot of work and chances are he will take off points for stupid details.
