I took Professor Drake's Documentary class during the Spring 2021 semester. Professor Drake was usually very helpful and understanding though she sometimes didn't hold back when it came to criticism of projects (usually constructive). Prof. Drake worked at National Geographic for many years, so she brought a lot of good experience to the class. However... Prof. Drake style of documentary filmmaking is stuck in the 80s/90s, and unfortunately to succeed in the class, your documentary has to please her. The class is overall a good time though a lot of actual class time is wasted watching YouTube videos rather than working on the documentary when we have access to Professor and all group members have an hour and fifteen minutes set aside for the class. Oh and as far as assignments, nothing is ever clearly defined. The biggest things grade wise are the midterm pitch (you and your team prepare a pitch packet and present this to the class), the final video and participation. Bottom Line: This class definitely teaches you a lot of useful skills. While Prof. Drake might be a little frustrating at times, she is overall a good resource and she simply wants her students to succeed. Takes a lot of time (particularly at the end of the semester), but overall a pretty easy A. :)
