She runs a 200 person lecture as though it were a 30 person discussion. The readings are boring and from her book, and she has little technical knowledge. However, for those engineers deciding between her or another, she's probably your best bet. We had one midterm and no final, so the majority of your grade is essays with a little bit of participation in your discussion. Really, your grade is entirely determined by your T.A.
Johnson is not a very exciting lecturer. There is no point in going to the lecture period except that she takes attendance. Discussion sections can be interesting if you end up with a good group of people, but the readings discussed are boring and sometimes poorly written and unclear. Definitely not the best STS professor.
This class at times seemed very boring and difficult to stay awake so try not to distract yourself with iphones, etc. Also, attendance is mandatory and she takes attendance every discussion, lecture. With that said, it's not difficult to do well in this class as long as you do the essays well. The TA, Stacie Thyrion, will look at your outline before the essay is due so there's no reason not to do well. Course work included: four 500 word papers, two 1000 word essays, 2 quizes, class discussion & news articles.
Great professor - very relaxed and really encourages engaging discussions. There isn't a lot of work, but she expects clarity and quality on what she does assign.
Most of the time you spend on this class will be reading. They can be long, but it's worth it. A lot of the articles are pretty interesting, and they will help you a lot when you write the essays.
