Review Summary Updated April 05, 2026

Lectures are largely wasted time since the instructor reads directly off posted slides, making attendance optional and independent study essential. The real hurdle is the exam format, which features notoriously tricky word problems, multiple-choice questions with no partial credit, and a stark disconnect from the straightforward homework and lab work. Fortunately, highly lenient drop policies for quizzes and assignments heavily cushion your final grade, so you can still finish in decent shape if you systematically review the materials on your own. Treat this as a mandatory prerequisite rather than an engaging course, skip the redundant lectures, lean on office hours for clarification, and prepare for tests by drilling the posted slide concepts instead of relying on in-class examples.

I hope that it is just the professor that is the issue. The class average on the first two exams this semester has been around 80%, maybe a little bit lower. There are labs and quizzes in this class worth 25% and 15% respectively. If you ask the TA if a question is right or wrong, they will give you the wrong answer in the labs, where they are supposed to help you, which is crazy.

The exams are 25 questions and they tend to place a lot of trick questions. It is extremely hard to succeed and get an A in this class (95%+, as a 94% is an A-) with her only posting slides and there not truly being a textbook to follow. I'm a first year and took this class to look better for the Comm school and possibly double major in Stats, but now I am completely straying away from that thought. I know countless people that have studied extremely rigorously for the exams, whom walk out thinking they got a 92%+, and then they get a 78%. If you take this class, just be ready, especially with Martinet.

The class is not as difficult as the 3.1 GPA suggests; it is heavily brought down by many non-math-inclined students who have to take it as a prerequisite. Lectures are largely useless, and by the end of the semester, half the class stops attending because she just reads from slides that are already posted on Canvas.

Quizzes are worth 15%, and labs are worth 25%. If you don’t get 100% on these, it’s on you. She drops a large portion of them, and your lab TA will basically give you the answers if you at least try. The tests were reasonable, with average scores around 80%.

There are no curves, except at the end of the semester when she might slightly lower grade thresholds by a percent. Overall, getting an A- (89%) is not that hard if you study at all. The professor is a nice person, but probably don't matter because most people will never have a reason to speak with her.

Imma be honest, I haven't shown up to lecture since the first class. I just go look at the lecture slides and make my own notes and so far I've gotten 23/25 and 22/25 on each respective mini exam. The class is not hard, I spend like zero time on it. I'm giving her a 5 star as an instructor (I don't even remember what she looks like at this point). There's barely any math, except for a few equations, but you can just write them on your study sheet for when you take the exam. The exams are not cumulative which is super nice and the labs I just do on my own at home and ask Chatgpt for when I'm confused on a subject. The lecture slides are actually super good and if you actually just read through them and take notes then you are golden.
TLDR Easy class, I take my own notes and don't go to lecture and have an A/95 (before final)

Dr. Martinet is the most organized professor I have had. She is very patient with students and receptive in office hours. Unfortunately this class was incredibly boring .

Although this class was recently restructured to include a heavier coding component, Prof. Martinet makes sure to not place too much of an emphasis on the code so as to not overwhelm those who have never taken a cs class before. Instead, she spends the majority of class time giving an overview of basic statistical concepts, which are then reinforced with the labs and homework. The work load is definitely doable, especially for being 4 credits. Prof. Martinet is very intelligent, but also very sweet and cares about her students. Clickers, post lecture quizzes, labs, and both midterms are 10% each, and homework is 15%, as is the group project with peer review, and the final is 20%. Exams are very fair, and she drops the lowest few quizzes, labs, and homeworks. If you are on the fence about taking this class, you definitely should!

Gretchen is the hands down the BEST PROFESSOR. She is very organized and clear about expectations from the beginning of the semester. There is nothing in the homework that can't be solved using the slides, and labs can be easily completed during the 50 minutes (usually less though). I never bought the textbook and I don't need it because everything is explained well in class. Take this class and take it with Gretchen!!!

The class explains very little and leaves you to figure out everything by yourself. The only thing that is clear are the deadlines

Martinet makes this class very difficult and is not a good lecturer. Be prepared to learn everything on your own. Her lectures are powerpoints pulled straight from the book. The homework is difficult and doesn't refer to the book. good luck.

Ugh this was the worst class I have taken at UVA. Martinet did not teach or offer any useful help. The online work did not relate to the textbook or lecture materials. Yahoo answers was 18577465638294 times more helpful than Martinet. Take it with someone else if you can.

I would not recommend this class if you do not have to take it (precomm). Although Gretchen seems like a pretty good person, she structures the class in a frustrating way. There are weekly homework assignments that take a while, once a week individual lab assignments, once a week group labs, and a semester-long group statistical study. There are two midterms and a final exam, all of which have average grades in the high 60's/low 70's because the questions are completely different from any of the homeworks and labs. She doesn't curve because she says it isn't necessary considering how well everyone usually does on the other factors in your final grade. Although I did end up with a pretty ok grade and what she said held true, it was a very stressful semester of studying very hard, not doing well on exams, and having no idea how my final grade would turn out.
