I took this course to gain a better understanding for statistics since I am a politics major. At first it was easy, very basic concepts, didn't pay attention in lecture or look at notes once until about 2-3 weeks before the midterm. Then the material started picking up, it was not as easily comprehensible. I disliked how the class didn't have an attendance policy, because I had no motivation to go. You only have to be there every other Friday for a lab. Homeworks were doable, and labs were fine if you had a good group. Overall, would've been an A if I put more effort, but I got into such a habit of not paying attention to this class because of the speed at the beginning that I had no time or motivation in me at the end when the rest of my classes picked up as well. The concepts learned are useful, however, and have helped me in my other Politics classes.
One of the worst professors I’ve ever had here at UVA, genuinely. If you can avoid taking her class, I would recommend doing that as much as you can. I took her class, STAT 1602, in the fall of 2024 (this is not showing up on Course Forum for some reason), and I DEEPLY regret it. She runs her class so differently than the other professors, and it gets really frustrating, especially when you hear how much easier all the other sections are in comparison to hers.
She requires attendance for labs, which is the most tedious thing ever because you go in and sit for a good 20 minutes to watch her give a lecture that goes in one ear and out the other because it’s so UNENGAGING. Then, she has us sit to do a 'lab.' None of the other classes require attendance, and honestly, her lectures aren’t helpful at all or intuitive, so I end up self-teaching the material.
I am premed, so honestly, right off the bat, statistics is not something I like or care about, and I hate coding with a passion. I have to take this class because it is strongly recommended for my major, so I might be a bit biased, but there is no reason for AN INTRO CLASS to be this difficult and to have THIS MUCH discrepancy between the sections. Even the exams are not the same; she makes them insanely long and difficult for no reason, and she’s not a lenient grader.
This is an intro class, and I never expected it to be an easy A. I genuinely went into it kind of excited to learn something new outside of my premed classes, but she’s made my experience so awful, especially with her teaching style being so uninteresting and unengaging.
